overall length questions

I know that the question of length has been brought up many, many times and it seems that there is no true answer but...I am looking more for a comparison, maybe.

I currently have a 35' TT and I know how long my combo is (2004 RAM 3500 Quad cab) If I look at a similar size fifth wheel how much does that (if any) change my overall length of combo?

We will be slightly downsizing, for a number of reasons, and will probably go with a fifth wheel. Just curious how they measure out after hookup to the TV.

Thoughts?
  • If just overall length, i.e.,if the 5er is 35' long from front of pin to the farthest point on the back of the 5er, your combo will be shorter because approx. 2' or so of the 5er (ball parking here), will be over the bed of the truck....IF you're taking 35' of living space in the 5er, it's actual length could be 37' or so, ( again, ball parking) , but 2' or so of that would be over the bed of the truck so, it could be same length as the combo you have now, (again.....ball parking).

Usually dimensions on the 5er, inside length and "towing length" can be found on manufacturer's website, or found in brochures.

Well if your 35'TT is the length of the unit less tongue, then for a similar 35' 5th wheel will be tow 4' to 6' shorter.
If 35' is the overall length, then the difference would be about 3' to 4'.

For the same size(overall length)trailer measure from the front of your trailer to appx 6" in front of the rear axle.
  • The factory web site says the stated length of my 35'-8" 5er is measured from the front of the pin box to the rear bumper. The front of my pin box is about 5' forward of my truck rear bumper when hitched on my long bed. Add a few more inches for the length from the truck bumper to the hitch ball and the total savings of overall length of the truck/5er would be nearly 6' over a truck/TT.
  • I picked up about 4' with my setup compared to a bumper pull, so I've got the equivalent of a 28' TT in terms of total length. But it also tows a whole lot better being a fifth wheel. I use a rail mount Andersen flipped back so I'm hitched a little farther back than I would be in a long bed, so I didn't pick up as much as some.
  • The book shows my fifth wheel being 38' and some change. From the front cap to the rear cap is 42'.

    Same here.
My first TT was listed as 23.5 but really only 19" as they include the A frame hitch.
    My toyhauler lists 38"9 and I measure 40" 2.

The model numbers fool people also. My former cougar sab 27 was listed on insurance as 27 footer and it was 30 measured.
