Owners of Reese Elite 5th Wheel Hitch

I recently bought a used 2013 Reese Elite 5th wheel hitch and am questioning jaw position when engaging the trailer kingpin. When I open the jaw by pulling back the lever to the lock open position, the throat of the hitch is still partially blocked by some of the jaw.Is this normal and does this move out of the way when trailer kingpin bears against it?
  • That is the way mine works,I had it checked out and the Dealer stated it is working correctly.

When that bit that sticks out gets pushed back it unlocks so that jaw closes around the pin as you continue to back up. If you stopped backing before the jaw latches and then pulled forward, the jaw will lock closed. Then you have to get out and open latch it again. Wonder how I know this?
