Parallax power supply noise model 555

The Parallax power supply converter has worked flawlessly for the last 7 seven years. Now when a light 12volt is on, you can hear a high pitch noise come out of it.

Looked at some other sites said its the fan etc.

Any of you had the same experience?

If replaced, did you go with the same model/brand? The cover on this one is 13"x14".

Thanks for any input.

  • Do not pass go, do NOT collect $200.00 change out the POS Parallax with a PD to match your battery bank (more batteries, more amps). I have two 12v or two 6v GC (depending on what I get cheap) and I went with a 60 amp and it works great, recharges off the genny very fast.

One word of warning, check the output wires on the new converter before you install it, mine came already installed and they were not done right, clamp set screw was on the insulation, not the wire. Drove me nuts trying to figure out why, two years after I installed it, that it wasn't charging.

One other question: The amps of the unit only refer to how fast or how much power goes to re-charging the batteries?

The amp rating is the total current available for both the battery and any 12V items (lights, etc.) to share. A higher rating means the battery will charge faster.
  • I watched a you tube video of a guy changing out the unit. Looks easy. I thought when I opened the cover that the circuit breakers, converter were all one unit.. Now i realize the converter is wired in between 12v and 120v.

  • do as PEG LEG SAYS .the progressive unit is great and they,ll talk you thru the change if needed.
  • My Parallax fan always made a lot noise but it wasn't high pitched. When mine failed it was the round toroidal core transformer that had a melt down. Every now and then we'd get a whiff of a burnt smell that would go away quickly.

I replaced mine with Progressive Dynamics PD9260 with the charge wizard. It was a easy switch. The Parallax didn't seem to have good reviews when I checked. The PD9260 had good reviews and with some shopping it was about a 175 shipping and all. I've been using for 2 yrs and it has done a fantastic job. Does a great job. Batteries use less water than any converter I've had.
