In reality the OP is responsible for damages to the sign.
Thinking that the lot owner is responsible for the damages to the trailer is a stretch. Once you leave a main public road you may run into many lower clearances. It is the operators responsibility to watch out for any thing that could cause damage to their unit.
It is all about personal responsibility, you didn't see the post, you hit the post look better next time. It isn't always someone else fault when you don't look.
