My understanding is that the vaccine does not eliminate the need for treatment after a bite, just makes the bite less likely to be fatal and recovery time less.

You are right they will still need vet attention but the shots will save their lives. Even at our home in Wyoming we are at least 30 to 45 minutes away from the vet. When camping we may be even further away. The shots slow the venom and help the dog deal with it until they can get to a vet.
