pin box crooked?

it is really hard to tell in pictures but my last trip i noticed my pin box looked crooked in my rear view mirror. it was not only me but my wife saw it too. This is a new trailer and out second trip. i did not notice it the first trip but i have since raised the hitch plate up to give a little more clearance. it tows fine but is this an issue? even if not a major issue i still want it fixed it drives me crazy. i have another trip planned next month and i have an appt at the dealer (3 hours away) for them to look at something else....should this be looked at?

  • frame of the unit, or frame of the pin box, n trouble? i do not know what frame i have i just know it is aluminum.
  • Let me guess Lippert frame? Have the exact same issue but leaning the other way.
  • yes, without dropping the skin everything seems to be ok. it looks worse in person than i can get in the pictures. with the trailers auto level set, it is still obviously off. i have a buddy who owns an rv repair place and he might ride over to look at it. and like before i have an appt at the dealer in a month when i am going that way on a trip so i will have them look at it.

pretty sure my holes are not slotted....

In most cases, the hole is clearly larger than the bolt diameter. So, yes, the bolt can shift, even when tight, due to the forces involved. However, usually both sides will move by the same amount. Looking at the pics, it doesn't appear that bolt placement has shifted on either side as there is no evidence of exposed, unpainted steel around the washers.

The other possibility is that there are broken welds on the bracket that holds the pin box, check the curb (i.e. passenger side). If the welds are ok, then check to see if a cross member is bent. Check both the main one in front of the brackets and the rear one. This won't be ez as you probably have to drop the skin.
  • Kinda hard to tell from the pics but it does look slightly crooked in one of the pictures. It may not be anything to worry about but I could never live with that, at least without having it inspected. The mounting holes are definitely not slotted but there may be enough jiggle room in the mounting bolts to loosen then re-toque. On the other hand, the mounting bracket for the pinbox may be tweaked, bent or mis-drilled? I guess there is also the remote possibility that the trailer frame is tweaked. I notice it's a new pinbox, I'd measure it up to make sure it's squared up. Whatever it is, I'd want to know what's going on....especially with a new rig.
  • Have you actually physically checked the level of the pinbox, i.e. a plumb line? Or compared how level the pin box is compared to the countertop inside. Seems like it would be pretty easy to check.

I'm assuming you're talking about being unlevel side to side, but you may be talking about it being skewed front to back.
  • The rear bolts where pin box attaches are slotted. Make sure they are lined up the same on both sides. If not torqued properly they can move
