Portable Air Conditioner

I only have one roof mounted air conditioner on my 2000 HitchHiker II. Not sure it will suffice. Does anyone have any experience with the portable floor type models? Wondering what every one has experienced, good or bad.

Bad, tried it in the RV and even with extra insulation around the exhaust pipe, it added as much heat as it removed. Instructions from one of the brands stated that to maintain cooling efficiency the intake pipe should not be used when outside temp exceeds 85 F. So, in an RV, outside heat is entering thru all the small cracks/leaks in the far corners of the trailer and cool air near the portable unit is being pushed out thru the exhaust pipe.

In a difficult situation, I had better results with a

redneck air conditioner, a styrofoam cooler, 10 lbs of ice and a small fan.

    X2

Homemade swampy coolers rule...AND work!!!! :B:B

They actually sell a non-redneck cooler version, no intake pipe needed that uses the ice and water and runs off 12v. :W

Albiet for emergency purposes only. You could not schlep enough ice in to cool an RV permanently!

Personally I'd use the plain ole redneck cooler version you did! :C
  • I used one last year year when my ac broke and it did the job kept the camper at 82. We were in full sun and it was mid to upper 90s outside. Yes loud but better than no ac. Try yours and go from there.
  • Thanks you everyone for the feedback. I'm glad to read I should hold off and see how mine actually performs.

  • What rockhillmanor said is all true, however I was in Vegas and my AC died. A park employee lent me a portable to use until I could have mine replaced. It was a life saver for me and my dog. While it did not do as well as the original, it kept my 40' fifth wheel livable with 100 degree temps.
  • They are LOUD. And very inefficient.
And they all require that you have to exhaust them thru a wall or window. Which is not conducive to a MH.

Many RV's get along with just one ac unit. It's how you take action to insulate/cover windows, roof vents etc in extreme heat conditions is what helps to assist your ac.
