I used a portable and kept it in a basement compartment so it was sout of sight just like a hard wired one. I wouldn't have a hard wired one unless it had a bypass feature. and those locks that lock the cords together will only insure that your cord will be cut and ruined. but get a multi function surge protector, not the $90 special.
