Monty, it looks like you have at least won a few battles if not the war with only the clean up left. Hopefully!!
IIRC, our main a/c will cycle or, occasionally not come on at all, or at least until it gets so dang hot that sweat pours. And my cure was to take the 'stat off auto and put it on a specific temperature control. I am not a fan of those currently common little 3" square black thermostats as they seem to have a mind of their own.
The basement weatherstripping on ours was put back in place with some 3M permanent 2 sided tape ("snot")
