We went to AK in 2010. Purchase the Milepost 2014 Guide. We found the information invaluable. Had information on rest stops, grades, gas stations, etc. There are many 10% grades along the HWY. Having the milepost guide gave us a heads up before we got there. Take your time and enjoy the adventure. We were gone 100 days. What an adventure!! We made reservations before we left. However, we wouldn't do that again. You really don't need them. There is always a place to stay. Watch out for logging trucks and tour buses. One of our favorite places was Ninilchik, Alaska.
