Does he have the exact same combo as you? I think there is more to the story than just 'never tow in OD'.
Agreed. My '08 has 6 gears in the auto and basically 2 OD gears between 5 and 6. My truck has 3.73 gears and I sit on 35" tires. I tow in 5th, with a tuned truck and tuned transmission with stock internals.
I towed our old 5er in 5th and I borrow my parents 5er now and it is a little smaller than my old one. Same deal, tow in 5th, so theoretically I am towing in OD. I WON'T tow in 6th unless I regear the truck to keep from lugging under a load.
Each rig and setup is different but if you had your trans built for towing I would think that you would be fine. IMO
