He told me he has torn up a couple of trans by using overdrive. I was curious about other peoples experience about towing with an automatic. When going up any grade the over drive goes off.

I can't speak for a auto, but with what you have I see no reason for not using OD, on flat land. I have the 5 speed manual. That said even with 3.55 it doesn't strain pulling 11,000# at 65+ on the flats.
Your issue would be too much power for the build on the Tranny.
