A 1500 gasser will probably need to run in 3rd if it does not have a Tow/haul switch. The diesel with a 4.10 or even a 3.73 axle, there is no need to drop out of OD unless the transmission is hunting between 3rd and OD.
No one said how old was the OP's diesel truck. The newer ones will have the tow/haul switch. Put it in tow/haul and let the computer do what is best until you get to a point it is hunting between gears.
I am towing a 40' fifth wheel and I am near max ratings. The truck is a 1 ton F350 dually, 6.7L diesel with a 3.73 axle. We run in D and tow/haul most of the time. Occasionally I will manually shift and lock it into 4th or 5th gear in the hills.
