Question regarding gravity feed on RDS tank.

I just installed a RDS 60 gal. diesel aux tank in my PU. Seems to work OK and no leaks. When I took the cap off of the main tank, diesel came running out. My understanding of the system was that the float in the "T" would cut off flow from the aux. tank when the main tank was full up to the "T.". The "T" on the filler tube is about 1' below the main tank cap. Question, for those that use this system, is this the normal way things should work?

  • Mine just has a T and will overflow if the cap on the main tank is removed. I have a manual shut off on the aux. tank.

  • Mine works just fine. You do have a check valve in the "T" that goes into your filler pipe. In order for that to work properly it must be mounted in a vertical position. I can remove the cap and never have a problem. If that is the case then it may be faulty. I would call RDS and ask them.

  • There's no float, the back pressure in your main tank keeps it from over filling. If you want to take the cap off you have to shut the manual valve from the tank. I put a 12 volt valve from ebay in line so I just turn it on when it gets down to half tank and leave it on running down the road put it on ing. circuit so it shuts off when you turn truck off so no problems.
  • Mine overflowed when I took the cap off, I was wondering if this is normal. Thanks for the reply.

That is how it is supposed to work and the way mine works.

It does not overflow when the cap is removed. I believe my t is installed about the same as yours although a Ford.
