Posts like this just make me SICK! and MAD! and extremely GRATEFUL (NOW). Been there ... done that! And am still ANGRY... mixed emotions ... yes!
Ours was not an HOA, but simple city Zoning ordinance. After 10 years of parking our 3 different campers beside the house, came the day zoning said we had to move it or be fined. We explored every option AND MOVED!
Short term solution, we moved the camper to the In-Laws home. They live on a farm near Lafayette, Indiana and let us park it in the barn lot. Problem was, they were an hour away from where we live. Still, we had somewhere to park it without having to put it in a storage facility.
We then tried battling "city hall" and lost on every front. Everything we tried was either a failure and did not work. My philosophy was, "I sleep were I can park my camper. If I can't park my camper there, I don't sleep there either."
Long story short, we threw the house up for sale and bought another house in the next county over, where we're zoned agriculture, can still burn our own trash, park on our own grass, and run bare in the back yard if we want to and no nosey-faced neighbor is staring down our back yard reporting us to the zoning board because they live a miserable life!
Well, like I said, I have extremely mixed emotions when this subject comes up, and today my blood is boiling again. Moving was the BEST think we could have done. We've had such peace and solitude since then (5 years ago now), we enjoy the camper, sleep in it every week-end (drive way camp) when we're not on the road, and truly love the country lifestyle (again). We should have never moved into a town!
My blood still boils when I think about how horrible it was dealing with that community. But VERY happy now.
Move! It's the ONLY solution. You will not win!
