I'd be interested in the outcome and I'm sure others would, DNC. You sound like a reasonable person, and your compromise sounds very workable.
Our HOA allows RVs for up to a week. But the covenants allow van parking, and no one has ever complained that our Sprinter should be classified as an RV versus van. Maybe someone will someday, and we'll appeal the way you are doing.
Neighbors can cause problems even without HOAs, even on large parcels. Saw a Dateline TV show about people with adjoining lots in Carmel Valley, CA who had conflicting approaches to life. One 72 year old man was very orderly with his property. Neighbors in their 50s were free spirits who had signs, sculpture, decorative old battered wooden boat, surfboards as fences, a lot of stuff hanging from the trees, etc.
These neighbors so annoyed one another that the 72 year old guy ended up shooting the other two. He's now serving a life sentence.
