Why not plan some of these things on a camping trip where you may have cement pad to work on and electricity to use. That's what I do. My 5er sits on a gravel driveway across the road from my house. I have the luxury of doing whatever I want when ever I want (living in the country) but when it comes to crawling around on the ground to work on something I will plan for that while we are camping on a cement pad. I have never in my life been on a single camping trip where I didn't find myself bored for a short period of time. These thing keep me busy in those times rather than sitting in front of the TV watching a movie.
Over the last 24 hours while I've been mulling over my options, I've thought of that. Our trips are typically 4 days -- and we go places where there's "stuff" to do...and sometimes we hang around camp. But this is my vacation with my girls...and I want to spend time with the family. If we're around camp, we're walking around, playing cornhole, playing a board game, and spending time together. If I had to...and there were no other way...I could bring tools and stuff with me...but that would eat into my time with the kids. They're getting older...and I want that time with them while I can still get it. A normal day has my feet hitting the floor at 6am and not getting a break until 10pm or later. When we finally align our schedules and get out on a camping trip, maintenance tasks are low on my priority list. But, it would be plenty fair for everyone to suggest that I'm being stubborn now. There are other options...and if I want to keep the camper bad enough, I'll fully entertain and explore those options. I guess I will submit that if I have to take time away from my family to do maintenance tasks while I'm vacation, then that particular activity doesn't fit into our lifestyle at that given time and we'll find another family activity. Everyone makes different choices and prioritizes differently. But here I am getting all philosophical again.
Thank you, everyone, for all this great feedback and great suggestions. Only we can figure out what makes sense to us. I'll be diplomatic with the HOA and do my best to find a happy medium -- but if I have to give up the camper, we'll go back to tent camping and we'll just go fewer times a year and when the weather is nice. I still have all the gear. :)
