I joined the board of my HOA to temper what I believed to be overzealous rule enforcement. It was no coincidence that out of 100 homes in the community and only 5 RV owners, two of us were on the 5 person board. If you can't compromise, it might not hurt to get yourself on the board. As soon as I can, I will move somewhere where I can park the trailer on my property.
