Sept and Oct in the Cascade mountains should not be bad. September is truly beautiful in the Cascades. If you want to come east from Ontario on Hwy 20 to Bend you could always head south out of Bend on Hwy 97 and then exit 97 onto Hwy 58 toward Eugene. 58 is a major east/west truck route and is an easy drive but there are some downgrades (6%?) to be aware of. From Eugene area , south on I5 to Grants Pass.
