I'll give you another example. See the truck and trailer in my sig photo? That was our first combo... a 2003 Nissan frontier CC LB 4x4 supercharged with a 5000lb tow rating towing a 2004 Traillite 8211, dry 3330 lbs and 540lb tongue weight. I had no trouble at all with that combo either. Didn't have sway problems, wasn't overloaded (close on payload), didn't have to drive slow, didn't overheat, etc. We did about 40 trips with the 2 til I bought an 07 Frontier, then did 50 more! I'm in CA and go way into the Sierras. You're really not asking too much of a Taco... upgrade in a year if you really want more. Better yet, get a little bigger TH and a new truck in a year if you think you might be compromising on TH size to fit your Tacoma.
