Hmmm... if it was only basic physics and physics alone. Then maybe there wouldn't be so MANY manufacturers of Adapters and users and CW wouldn't sell them and the NHTSA could get involved.
Nor could so many tow for so long and so far. Is a stronger steel frame, a much stronger 21K Pinbox (5 vs 4 Bolts per Wing too) and a 30K lbs rated adapter (vs the 16K lb rated Goosebox) on my RV also fated to fail? Time will tell. Can I get any credit for conducting a real world experiment and truthfully reporting as best as I can?
I can't "prove" that the pothole was so bad it overcame the stress reduction of the Goosebox and forced the frame up. Nor can I prove the Goosebox failed, or was it just the frame? Just that frame damage was evident a few hundred towing miles later and continued towing damaged the frame even more but did not separate the Goosebox from the frame catastrophically.
Assuming the Pinbox "lever" on the frame is a given, how much extra stress would 6" horizontally of adapter offset from the Kingpin actually introduce and what would be the fulcrum? And what would it take to actually bend anything? My front Frame box beam was bent straight up.
There's always risk involved towing, but as in this case the likelihood is low and the consequences aren't deadly. Not like using a Propane Refrigerator :)
I'm content to accept the risk of towing with a Gooseneck. But I did replace the Propane Fridge with a Residential Fridge upon purchase - which was several months before I got the Recall notice.
What's neat about Gooseneck Threads is they always come up (I reviewed MANY before I even got my RV back in 2007!) at least once a month with the same conclusions...
