Reese hitch creaks

Don't think I've seen this asked before. Coming home from our vayaky recently, we noticed the hitch making a creaking sound. Watching it in the mirror, the creaking was occurring when the hitch head went side to side. Probly nothing to worry about, but would spraying some slip plate inside the hitch help this? Thoughts as to why? Don't recall this noise before.
  • Inspect for any cracked welds or cracked or bent metal, as well as any unlubed areas that have pivoting or sliding contact.
  • Not sure which Reese you have, but on mine, there is a big pin that the head rotates side to side upon. Like about 2" diameter. Big pin. You pull that pin whenever you want to remove the hitch head from the base.

That pin needs some lubrication, just like any other moving part on the hitch.
  • Yea, probably just some lubrication needed...but... I would inspect everything and make sure it's right.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks troops!! It's a 16k non slider that I bought used few years back.Does have the big 2" pin as mentioned. Once we unhooked, rolled tonneau cover back over it, but dust was around for the week. Will take head off and check things out well and spray w/ slip plate. BTW, no grease fittings on this hitch.
  • every hitch pretty much can make noise when dry, when you unhook it go up and move it side to side, back and forth and you'll quickly see where its coming from. Good idea to check it over really good for cracks or damage while you do that. I look over my hitch pretty much everytime we finish a long tow, same goes for my tires and suspension on the truck and trailer - just a habit from an obsessive car guy though!
  • Mine did the same and now I hit it with spray lithium grease and now I can hear Frau Blücher "back seat drive" much clearer!!
