Refugio state beach

Made reservations back in Jan for Refugio state beach. This is the beach in Santa Barbara County that had the huge oil spill last year. Refugio became our favorite beach to bring out all the water toys, SUP's kayaks and long boards because of its mild surf tucked into a cove like area. It has a nice kelp bed 100 yards or so past the break, its really good for calico bass using artifical swimbaits. Last year the fishing was great with big white seabass and halibut being caught. There is also a paved path that you can walk, bike that has great views overlooking the ocean plus you can take the path to El Capitan SB beach thats about 3 miles long. You can also hike up on the mountain at the west end of the camground for more awesome views of the pacific and the islands. The campground has no hook ups or dump station only restrooms and showers, they do have a store.

Camp all setup.

Looking west

All loaded up. We like to load our gear and drive over to the day use parking lot and back right up the beach and unload, makes its super easy.

Paddled out about a mile or so and watched the whales cruise right on by, so awesome to be so close.

The whale coming up blowing out the spout

Some water toys.

Some evening shots

  • We were there at El Capitan about one week before the oil spill, parked at the furthest north RV parking area, which is a bare parking lot only.

    The squirrels are shameless beggars.

I think there was a huge wave event at Refugio a few months ago that damaged several RV's.

    we went to
Refugio about two months after and they did an excellent job cleaning it up. We haven't stayed at El Cap and I don't think we plan to since the RV spots are up top.
  • Thanks for the pictures, and up date. We will be there next month.

We were there last year and left the day of the oil spill, felt sorry for all the folks that had their Memorial Day Weekend spoiled. All the end spots were set up for large crowds with a lot of BBQs and smokers coolers, tables and chairs.
