Replacing coax?

Has anyone replaced a long pull of coax? I think mine is bad for my satellite connection. I just bought a Dish Tailgater and I get very poor/no reception when hooking to the onboard connection. If I hook the coax directly from the Tailgater to the reciever everything works fine. All I can think of is that the coax from the factory is bad. I did check for loose connections behind the wall plate and the outside connector but they were tight. Kind of disappointing in such a new rig. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  • Mark,
Just another thought. Does you roof antenna have a 12V booster in line? That may be your problem.

Hope this helps and God bless,

  • If you do determine that the cable needs to be replaced, talk to the service rep at your RV manufacturing company about how the cables are routed, and if they can be replaced. On our older class A, all wiring is routed through channels where the roof is attached to the walls. Unless the cables are anchored somewhere, you may be able to pull a new one.
  • Mark,
After we received our new unit in 08, we changed our service with Dish to have a DVR as we were full time. When the Dish guys first came, they had problems getting a clear signal to the TV in the rear den and the bedroom, both. They sorted out what cable went where, and it was not labeled right from the factory. They traced the coax out, connected it and bingo all has worked right since. They did have to do a little "southern" engineering, to have the TV in bedroom working as the second TV with the DVR in the den, but it has for 6 years. Basically, you can disconnect both ends of your coax, short out one end and ohm out the coax to check if it good or not. If it is good, try connecting that piece to the equipment and see what you get. If it is not good, it is not easy but changing it out can be done. Most of the time it is run in the roof. But, if your outside connection is in the outside utility closet, you can go down. You have to remove the underbelly panels to where your entertainment system is, then go back up. You might want to run an extra cable, for just in case, LOL. Just thinking, you might want to put anything else think you might need inside the underbelly.

    Hope this helps God bless,
    Mike
  • Thanks for the replys, my next step is to check the continunity...fingers crossed :-)
  • There is always the possibility that someone shot a nail or drove a screw thru the coax. But connectors are always number one on the suspicion list. Have you checked for continuity with a meter?
  • Might just be shorted connectors on the ends.
Mine has some causing poor reception.
