rockwood ultra lite

As you can see in my sig we have a Rockwood Signature Ultra lite 8281 that has been used for one night to date. Not that we won't be using it, we just purchased it a few months ago. Just in time to pay for winter storage. My question, after reading many posts on several sites, how good is a Rockwood? It seems to be quite well built. We will be leaving in early spring for a cross country trip of about 8000 miles. I am not asking because I have any issues. Just would like some input from more experienced rv ers

Air is made up of 78% nitrogen, plus dry rot is usually on the outside so I think it's OK.
I know the nitrogen fill has been discussed many times on many forums, my take is, it wouldn't sway me either way and if I needed to inflate a N2 tire, I'd use what ever was easily available.
  • looks like I have a few issues to watch for. I have never had an rv with slides so I didn't know what to expect. Camp-n-Family, I hope all the issues are fixed and your dad enjoys the unit. I don't for the life of me see tires dry rotting in one year but I guess anything is possible. Mine are nitrogen filled, would that cause premature aging???? Anyway, thanks for the response and good rving to all of you.
  • We are on our 2nd Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite and both have been trouble free.
  • I have the twin ( Flagstaff) and have little to no real problems. Carpet pulled up under the slide (fixed under warranty). Belly cover separated from the bottom in some areas and was fixed with some sheet metal screws.

Bathroom sink leaked and I fixed with a washer.

Besides that it has been uneventful.
  • We had a 2007 Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite and sold it this past year. The only problem we had with it was that the refrigerator died (a Dometic problem, not Forest River) and we needed to add some caulking to the bathtub.
  • Since you already own it, it's kind of late now to ask. I'll copy and paste what I wrote to another member about my fathers experience because it's too long to re type. Not to scare you, more of what to watch for.

My father bought a 2012 8289ws on my recommendation. I owned a Rockwood TT without any problems and never heard many complaints from others. I'm embarrassed now. Luckily he forked out for the extended warranty. It's been nothing but a nightmare since day one. The roof leaked around the shower skylight, now a recall item, then it leaked around the A/C and one of the slides. One slide was misaligned and rubbed through the vinyl flooring. Caulking was missing in several areas. The tires dry rotted within the first year. The stereo stopped working and the TV antenna never did. The dual mode water heater didn't work on electric and the list goes on. It has been back to the dealer countless times and has spent more than 6 months on the lot for repairs. It's going back to the manufacturer next month to have the entire roof replaced due to the leak damage.

We have met several others on the road with the same Rockwood and its twin Flagstaff model and many have had the same problems.

It is now back from having the entire roof replaced and all the other issues hopefully fixed. It's the dead of winter here so won't know for sure until the spring. It's not coming off the dealers lot until we can inspect it fully.
  • We have a 2010 8281SS and love it. We have 3 kids and a dog. We have been up and down the east coast from Florida to Massachusetts, including several 2000 mile round trips.

The only problem we have had is the main slide motor went out on us this past summer. Fortunately, we bought from a great local dealer we use for repairs and service, so no problem with the repair, although it took a little longer to get the part from Forest River. Other than that, we have been very pleased with the product. This is our second Rockwood product---we had a Roo hybrid for 4 years until the kids outgrew it and we traded up for the fiver. Our dealer sells lots of Rockwoods. He also carries Sierras, but that is about it.

We get our wheel bearings re-packed every fall and also have the dealer clean and re-seal everything on the roof. We moved into covered storage last year, and that has really helped cut down on sun exposure and weathering of the roof.

    Enjoy your trips!!
