I do when it is below freezing. None of my vents are covered and I live in Ohio. We travel to Florida every spring break and most of the time it is snowing in Ohio when we leave. I will flush the tanks and fill the water heater so we can shower half way down. I will run the furnace and water heater until we get above 40 degrees. I have never had an issue yet and my dad did the same growing up.
