I used to do this with my Hondas. I used the cut-resistant handle guards Honda sells and thick chains to chain them to the hitch, which was padlocked to the rails. Then for the exhaust I welded bungs onto the exhaust that attached to hosing I ran over the rails of the truck bed and out. Then I closed my (soft) Tonneau cover on top of them and left the velcro loose (for better airflow). Never had an issue. Also had them pulling from a shared 6 gal marine fuel tank so I didn't have to fill up as often.
