rusty landing gear

My landing gear has developed quite a bit of surface rust. On the legs, pins, and pads. My plan is to use a wire wheel on my angle grinder and remove the rust that's on there and then paint/clear coat them. Just wanted to see if anyone had any better options for this. Also noticed the brackets that hold the dump pipes and things like that also have rust on them so plan to do the same to them. I live up north and tow on salty roads so this stuff is to be expected. Just wanted to keep everything and clean and nice looking as possible. Ideas and tips are always welcome.

  • I had thought about either that or hitting them with POR-15. Rattle can would be cheaper and easier but POR-15 would be forever. Not sure about clearance though and if it would just scrape it off raising and lowering it a few times or if the POR-15 would cause issues with it not wanting to raise and lower without sticking.
  • try a can of rustoleum in the color of your choice and see how long it lasts.
  • I've never used liquid rust remover....I always just use some form of elbow grease either by sanding it off or using a wire brush or wheel. I've always been skeptical on how well that rust remover works. Probably wouldn't hurt to give it a try I guess.
  • The farm store here has gallon jugs of rust remover spray it on and rinse off works on tools?
