RV Barn solar pannels

My son in law is having a 34' x 46' RV barn built at the ranch to store his and our 5th wheels in and we are thinking of installing solar power for keeping the batteries charged and maybe keep a few other things charged . Do you have any thing like this and how has it worked out for you? If you know what gear to use please let us know it would be greatly appreciated . We'd like to install a good system not just a Harbor freight battery tender. Thanks for any and all info you want to share.
  • I would want a controller that give the batteries a equalization charge every month or so. Look at the specs on what you have, it might have that capability.
  • Solar is a one time cost.

Why not just run electricity and you can have it all.
  • I just got a 100w HQST kit from Amazon. Haven't used it yet, but plan on using it as a maintainer and an "extender" when we boondock. Has an MPPT controller...

  • I have a 40' x 80' pole barn with 4 - 100 watt Renogy panels on the roof and it is feeding the batteries in the fiver and another battery bank that I use for security & work lights. The Morningstar SunSaver Duo controller makes it easy to keep 2 different battery banks charged which in your case would let you keep the batteries in 2 RVs charged.
  • Isaac-1 is about right on wattage... I run 160 watts (two 80w panels) to keep 14 batteries charged up and keep a Whynter fridge/freezer running 24/7 from Spring till Fall, plus a few other minor items that stay alive on 12v.
  • I have a 150 watt panel on my roof of the fiver and a morning star 30 amp controller. I use it like you want to - to keep the batteries charged while its in storage. I also put in a battery disconnect to isolate the battery so there are no phantom draws. This has worked great for me and the batteries are always topped off. I bought the panel from solarblvd.
  • I would take a look at Eco Worthy or Newpowa or similar import solar panel kits for this. If all you want to do is maintain batteries, and maybe run some ventilation fans, and perhaps run the control side of an RV propane refrigerator, something in the 150 watt panel range should be more than enough. Say $200 - $250 for a kit with mounting brackets and charge controller on ebay. If you don't care about fans or running an rv refrigerator an 85 watt panel would be plenty, an 85 watt panel with mounting brackets, charge controller, etc. will run $110 or so. For ease of setup I would have a separate system for each RV.
