RV Carport

Would love to see some car ports that you all have and the dimensions? Looking to have one constructed before we take delivery of our new 5th Wheel. Thanks!
  • Mine is 12x50. Plenty of length and width but I did not go high enough. Added a boat..had to raise it. Got a new trailer...had to raise it again!!!. 50 ft. is A LOT to raise. Build it higher than you think you will ever need it!
  • An important note on metal carports is that going wider doesn't mean it costs more.
Mine started out at 12' wide and I found that the price remained exactly the same all the way up to 20' wide.
  • Whatever you build will be just a little too small. ;)

Don't have pics, but we built an extension onto our barn for my FW. I had not really figured width before giving numbers to our contractor and I wish I'd gone about 1' wider. I can open all slides, but there's very little room on either side, so I have to be extra-careful aligning it when I pull through. Thinking about sinking a strip pavers, just tire width, right where the trailer needs to be, to help with this.

I painted a white stripe on the floor to align the drivers side tires and the side of the rv.

Wouldn't last long on gravel. :B

  • When I had mine installed I thought 6' longer than the trailer would be good. Bought a longer camper so facing N/S the back was exposed to the weather if I protected the front or vise versa, I added another 10 foot. Now the ends are complete;y protected from sun or rain.

  • I don't have any actual dimensions, but you can work from the size of your new 5er. Personally I would like longer than the combined length of the trailer and tow vehicle. Width, enough to open the slides and possible the awning. Height, most 5vers are around 13 feet high so probably 16' more if you want to do roof maintenance in storage. The opening should be at least 10' wide by 14' high, more if there are elevation changes in the driveway or wider if turns have to be made for access.
Of course all this is dependent on the land/property available and the local bylaws and permit requirements.

  • Our is 15X42. 15" wide seems to be the bare minimum to be able to open the door on one side and fully extend the slides on the other. I spec'd it too tall though.
It's an ugly addition to the landscape but it sure does a nice job of keeping the weather off our new TT (and we never use the back yard for anything anyway).

It was great doing projects on the trailer last winter. I can even wax it when it's raining outside!

    (Sorry not a FW)
  • Before? I wouldn't until I measured it...real world measure hooked to your TV. For instance are you happy with the tires that come with it? Might go larger?
