RV Fifth Wheel VIN Decoder

Does anyone have any information concerning the 17 digit numbers in a VIN and wehat the numbers mean? I can find all the scoop about the 17 digit VIN number for automobiles, but cannot specifically find any documentation concernign the Fifth Wheel RV units.
  • There would be no "universal" decoder, since each builder is allowed great latitude in how they use those digits.
  • Interesting. The Owner's Manual for our brand new Grand Design Reflection describes the VIN as follows:

    Digits 1-3 SAE World Identifier
Digit 4 F for Fifth Wheel T for Travel Trailer
    Digit 5 Make/Model
    Digits 6-7 Length (ft)
    Digit 8 Number Axles
    Digit 9 Check Digit
    Digit 10 Model Year
    Digit 11 Manufacturing Plant
    Digit 11 Plant Line
    Digits 12-17 Sequential Build number

When we bought our new Silverback FW, the almost worthless manual that came with it did contain a section that showed how to decipher the VIN - it was about the only worthwhile information the manual contained.

Like I said, my 4 digit is a 5 (which works as a fifth wheel), not a F like your document state

My 5-6-7-8 digits would work as you suggest.

However, the ISO document (that regulates VINs) simply states these (4 thru 8) digits designate "Vehicle Attributes" and manufacturers may assign them as they see fit.

Digit 10 is supposed to be consistent for all VINs, and mine is correct for a 2012 model.

Digits 12-17 are the unique sequence number.
  • n7bsn - Interesting. Hope ours works out ok, as our sequence number is 314. Looking for break in weather for maiden voyage locally. KE4TCH and N4XYZ
