This is only partially correct. It can be achieved but you must have a compatible data plan, not all DP's allow tethering.
I don't have a "compatible data plan," I use EasyTether. It does not use the smart phone's tethering capability, for which Verizon charges a monthly fee.
Nope not true! A couple of years ago Verizon was forced to drop that idea. You phone can be used as a wifi hotspot with no additional charges if your on one of their current rate plans.
Using Foxfi or any one of the other hotspot apps only fools your cell carrier. You still pay for data useage based on your carriers rate structure and your plan. There seems to be a ton of misinformation being posted on this thread. To get the whole story, go talk to your carrier.
Data is data. You will be paying for data no matter how you access it. Mifi's only advantage is you are able to use your phone and wifi at the same time. Unless your in business and need that capability, its a waste of money.
Agree with you here; a lot of misinformation. I can use my phone as a hotspot and we also have a MiFi. Most campgrounds that offer WiFi, as you stated, is normally "sadly lacking" when it comes to using one's computer, phone, tablet, etc.
We now spend the majority of our time at our camp in WV, in the middle of nowhere and with Verizon we have phone service and internet, all at 4G...so we're happy with what we have.
