No Jim. I wouldn't think there would be safe, and quick enough way to do it, without, like someone said, doing a great amount of damage to the fifth wheel, or risking personal injury.
You did the right thing. All three of you are safe, and that's all that matters. I know it's easy to say. It has to be a pretty tough pill to swallow, and cannot even imagine what you two went through watching it happen. Talk about a helpless feeling.
