You're overcharging a battery, you get a STRONG sulphur odor from that.
Start out with a mostly discharged house battery, the chassis FIXED VOLTAGE charging system will quickly result in battery out-gassing.
Check the battery water level, it might seriously "boiled" off.
The smells of sulphur and sewage are two completely different things. I'm sure th OP would have mentioned a rotten egg smell if the battery was the problem.

Strange....
Years ago we rented a decked out bus, with driver, for a family trip/get together.
Not long into the drive the odor of sewer gas (or so we thought) resulted in the driver finding a dump station.
But the odor persisted...
Then the engine stopped.
Emergency service arrived and quickly discovered that the chassis battery (diesel engine) was seriously outgassing due to be overcharged.
The over voltage had burned out the engine ECU.
Sad ending to our trip.
