Short bed manuvering

My wife and I are considering a fifth wheel. The dealer told me since I have a GMC 5 3/4' bed Id have to have a slider hitch. He said that once in a while in a tight spot in a campground I will need to slide it backwards for more room between the cab and trailer. Any experiences out there that might help me decide? Thanks
  • Wow thanks everyone. I think Ill look into the auto slider. If not I think Ill be ok with the manual. I appreciate all the input.
  • I have a slider and have never needed it to get out of a pinch. But I use it all the time. In the maneuvering position, it's easier to hitch and I can access my front storage area much easier. My bed is 6.5' long
  • I have a Reese manual slider hitch and never use it. I used it once just to see how it worked but now I just plan ahead while driving. I'm always aware when backing and turning sharp. If I were to buy another hitch, I would get an auto slider along with a pin box upgrade with air ride.
  • I have a 6.5 ft box, dont have a slider. But, my pin box on my trailer seems to stick out further than most I have seen....guess I got lucky

  • I have had my 5th wheel for 7 years. Bought a slider hitch since I had the short bed F-250. never used the slider hitch. 2 weeks ago while getting in a tight space I hit the cab because I didn't use the slider. So yes get the slider and use it if it is an older 5th wheel. The new newer ones have a new front end that allows you to get closer to 90 degrees without hitting the cab.
  • Don't really need one.
Towed 95% with short bed GM trucks and never had a slider yet. On my third fifth wheel in five years and haven't seen a reason for one yet.

The trailer we are looking at is 23' lightweight. My concerns is maybe switchbacks on a 2 lane road or a hard turn off of a busy road into a parking lot or such.

If you are concerned about those issues while traveling. You need an auto slider. Pullrite superglide is a great auto slide.

Sounds like the 2004 Ford F150 / 2004 Dutchman 29Q are history. What size GMC do you have and what weight 5er are you looking at?
A slider hitch is not much more $$$ than a new rear window and some body work to make it fit back in the hole it goes in.
Trying to make a U turn is hard on windows too.
  • With that short of a bed, yes you're going to need a slider.
