Our first truck was an '06 SRW F350 short bed. I had a Reese 16k slider. My first trip out I forgot to slide the hitch back and did contact my cab. It was a very tight spot but luckily a ranger was watching me and stopped me before I did any damage. That being said I only used the slider a few times mainly back out of my driveway, 90° backup.
Our new truck is a long bed dually so no need to worry about hitting the cab. I went with long bed for the axillary fuel tank and a tool box behind the hitch.
If I were to ever buy a short bed I would get an auto slider and not worry about it. I believe in the saying its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Good luck with your new fiver. Happy camping.
