I've towed fivers for 25 yrs and owned nothing but short bed trucks. Never had a problem. Started before sliding hitches were available, finally bought one about 10 yrs ago, but never used it, so switched back to the old fixed legs.
Since you already have a short bed truck, but don't have the hitch, I recommend the Reese Revolution (aka Sidewinder) pin box and you won't need any type of sliding hitch. Plus the fiver won't cut corners as bad and it will respond better when backing into a spot.
You will probably want to remove the above rail tool box and replace it with a flush one.
