Picked up a new to us 2007 Kz Sportsmen 3551lx.I'm new to camping in general so there's a bit of a learning curve. As you can see the camper is a bit low on my stock height Ram. I'm thinking I'll have to do a subframe lift this fall in the off season as it tends to drag the rear in certain situations. I should be able to go down about two inches on the hitch and get to the magic 6 inch number people seem to recommend. My other issue- the pin box on this trailer is extended, a lot. It tows just fine but I'd rather have it further forward to A- get more weight on the front of the truck, and B. Stop scuffing my tonneau cover rails I think I'm going to go with a Moryde, they seem to have a good following and aren't priced too high. The camper pulls fine but if I'm going to replace the box I might as well upgrade at the same time. They have two options, a short pin box which would move the trailer forward 21 inches from its current place, or one that'll move it 9 inches, they call it medium. The short box would only allow around 7 inches of clearance between the bumper and the front of the camper.. Not sure if that's too close. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

A shorter pin box will not shift any weight forward, you will need to move your hitch forward to shift the weight.

Some have trimmed the rear of the pin box at a 45 degree angle to remedy the pin box scuffing the box rails. My self I wouldn't want to go to a shorter pin box as I can now lower my tail gate and hitch up. Wouldn't be able to do that with a shorter pin box as then the tail gate would hit the trailer.

A shorter pin box will not shift any weight forward, you will need to move your hitch forward to shift the weight.

I don't believe you will shift much if any weight forward to the front axle. Some have trimmed the rear of the pin box at a 45 degree angle to remedy the pin box scuffing the box rails.

My self I wouldn't want to go to a shorter pin box as I can now lower my tail gate and hitch up. Wouldn't be able to do that with a shorter pin box as then the tail gate would hit the trailer.

I wondered about that too. The tail gate thing would be a hassle. You really don't think it'll affect how it pulls or handles?

I don't there's much I can grind without getting into the trailer frame, but I could be misunderstanding as well.

I agree with above about both the minimum weight shift and the tailgate issue. Looks like you have minimal clearance with the tailgate down now. If it did not clear, you would have to have someone stand back there and tend your tailgate when hooking and unhooking. Or get in and out of your truck to tend it yourself.

What pin box is on it now? I would think it over before going shorter, and not be able to open the tailgate, plus the rear bumper would come close in tight turns.

Leland 7921 from the centerline of the front bolts to the pin is about 19". There'd be ample bumper room with the medium Mor Ryde but only about 7 inches ish with the short one. Not sure if that's enough.
