SHOWER HEAD TEMPARATURE JOLTS

Good morning all!
We are long time RV'ers (40+yrs) and have owned our Cougar 327 since last year. We have always showered using the shower head toggle switch to shut off the water while lathering up then toggle the water back on to rinse conserving hot water. This process has worked well with all the other RV's that we have owned.
ISSUE:
However when going through this process with our new Cougar 327 we get a jolt of real cold water when we toggle the water back to rinse. We have tried everything from leaving a slow trickle to short intervals between rinses.
Is this a shower head replacement issue?
Or is this a plumbing issue?
Has anyone experienced this before?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Regards

  • The shut off on the shower head does not shut off completely per some government mandate. You can order valves that shut off completely on ebay (China) that will solve the problem.
  • Our Montana always gave the cold treatment from new and our Mobile Suite also gives the cold treatment. Beats not having a shower.
  • Had this in several RVs and boats till I figured out the prob, one reply up a ways had it. Either the hot or cold side has more pressure than the other. if the heater has just ran the hot will probably have more pressure also the flow of each (mix) If your water heater is set to too high of temp and your comfy mix has barely any hot to lots of cold. the fix is different better quality fixture or as some have suggested turn spray to side for a few seconds while it stabilizes
  • faucet link This is the one I have now. the last fiver we had I put in an oxigenics head, and it was OK but still lacked the control, the fine spray, and the feeling of full water washdown at reduced flow rate (<-?!?!) And NO cold or hot blasts. Anywho... this is what was in our boat when we got it and I love it! Much better quality and control, heavier than anything Ive seen stock in an RV, better than most homes nowdays!?!?! If your gonna keep and enjoy your RV / showers I recommend this!
  • All of my trailers have done this. I think the cold water backflows a bit into the hot water line. I think there is some science behind it but I cannot remember what I read about it years ago.

Can someone post a picture of the mentioned "toggle switch"? I've always had to turn both faucets handles off, and then re-adjust them when time to rinse.

    Here ya go!

The cold water plumbing has more pressure and pushes the hot water back toward the hot water heater. You can add a check valve to the hot water side OR do as I do, turn them both off when your doing the Navy shower thing. Our shower is hot all the way on and the cold a 1/4 turn so pretty easy to do.

FYI, I added a check valve to our hot water line and it didn't change anything. Still cold for a few seconds . . .
  • My Oxygenics has a slide bar in the hose. When in the off position, it dribbles which keeps the temperature stable and is comfortable when turned back on.
  • Mine is Oxygenics too but it's full cold when turned back on. It does get warmer faster due to the check valve, but still full cold when I flip the switch.
