Home Depot sells a product called a Zip It that's a long, narrow plastic piece with little spurs on it. Using one of those in the drain brings up a WHOLE LOT of ugly stuff from the shower drain. They are pretty cheap, too...only about $2.50.That's what I would use. It is more flexible and much better than a wire coat hanger.
