It is not cheap but you can't go too far wrong with a marine grade canvas. Taken care of it will last many many years.

for a repair that will last a good while, I've had good luck using Camco Awning Repair Tape

Make sure you get vinyl not acrylic. The acrylic is way too light and will stretch/hold rain water. There are other posts on this. PPL is good but have it installed by a pro unless you are really comfortable doing it yourself. The spring can be really dangerous.
