Slider hitch. Needed or not

Im looking for a Reese 5th wheel hitch and have found two used ones for sale. 1 is a slider and the other one isn't.
Would I be better off with the slider?
I have a 2005 F350 Dually with an 8' box.
Anyone have a slider in their 8' bed?
  • You shouldn't need a slider hitch with any 8' bed. Sliders were made for the shorter beds and many of those don't even need it anymore due to manufacturers changing the caps. As far as I know you can roll along worry free with respect to hitting the cab as long as your hitch is properly placed. Of course, bed rail clearance can still be an issue and must be considered.
  • 8' truck bed

    Slider hitch.......NOT needed

Could you use it..sure but it just has more parts that would require maintenance w/o any benefit.

    But why a Reese?
  • No slider needed. It would just add mornmoving parts and weight
  • FWIW, I used a regular (non-sliding) hitch in my short bed Dodge truck. As long as I was careful when turning sharply I was OK. I couldn't turn extremely sharp since I would risk hitting the truck's rear window. When turning sharply while backing into a space, I would keep a close eye on the fiver nose in relation to the rear window. I came close to touching at times but never actually hit the window. Just had to be careful and not rush things. Rushing gets a lot of folks in trouble, IMO.

Nice "Gee Whiz" - but Moot info for the OP with a long bed..:h

OP - you don't need a slider, no reason to have one..:W

  • I have seen a few with long beds use an autoslider hitch. Why? Because it allows them to have large items stored in front of the hitch above the bed rails. When turning the trailer moves rearward and the front nose stays clear of the stored items.
