What do you guys do to prevent stuff (boxes) in the storage area below from flying all over the place?

Fill it up pack it tight!
we have little problem with stuff sliding around in the basement, while it is somewhat full, the stuff that is a little looser doesn't seem to move much.
What is the floor covered with, as our is felt like carpet.
