what's the difference between a sw6de 5243a and a sw6de 5239a suburban water heaters?

- I think you have some numbers mixed up. The 5243A is a 10-gallon but is not associated with the model number you have preceding it. The SW6DE is a 6-gallon direct spark ignition.
Rob - I believe the 5243 is 10 gallon compared to 6 gallon for the 5239
