EMS-HW50C Surge Protection hardwired unit w/remote displayThat's the one we went with. Since the unit needs to be in the power line it was not convenient to get to. Behind the wall in the "basement" which puts it behind/under the coat closet with all the other controls, gages, etc. So we mounted the display in the closet with all the other displays.

Has worked great for the 2 years we have had it. Recommended for units with many electrical devices that need protection.We do have our display unit in a place where we can easily monitor usage as we turn on devices. Important when your hooked up to 30amp or less.

HW50C with remote since 2005. Now in second rig and never cut any existing wires, just rerouted them. I used a longer data cable for the remote. Note: this is a basic data cable which is like a phone cable except for 2 wires reversed. It was $2 including shipping on ebay - Not a typo.

Hard wire would be nice. However I went with portable. I always use it, as you never know when something might happen. 'where we camp I really don't worry about theft so portable works fine.

One of the PIs prior error codes is for low voltage. If upon returning to the rig I see that a red flag goes up.

I agree that we all have different requirements. Thankfully my HW50C protected the rig when I had 160V on a 30A pedestal. But I do recognize that is a rare event.

I went with this. I keep an eye on low voltage myself. I worry more about surges and mis-wired outlets and really didn't feel like spending hundreds of dollars on the other options and my inverter has many self protective features.

Others will disagree and want the best...depends on your point of view and what you feel like worrying about. I went years with nothing and have been fine.

Go hardwired. Mostly so you don"t have to worry about the pins on the portable burning up because it was plugged into a faulty burnt out outlet. And the remote so you can sit and watch the voltage flucuate. Really, it's handy to see if it sends a code.

Had our hardwired Progressive unit with remote readout for 6 years now and its been flawless.

Best choice in my opinion.

However, you can use 20(male)/30A(female) and 30/50 adapters to plug a portable into a 20A or 30A pedestal just as you would do for your 50A power cord.

We went portable as well. I use a pretty thick and sturdy bicycle locking cable secured around the pedestal.

I have an old surge guard without any kind of readout, just some lights to show things are OK when you start up. never saw the need for another gauge/dial to watch.
