- N-TroubleExplorerI would be willing to be over half of "sport" SxS sold end up in the dunes at one point or another. They are big with the dune crowd and that is where I see the new Yamaha with trans/manual clutch catching on. Many may still prefer a CVT for trail riding
- BedlamModeratorSand will definitely stress your transmission. I dropped down to shorter paddles that are less aggressive so I could stay in hi range without eating up belts. The engine put out enough torque, but at the expense of belts after every four days of deep sand. Lo range saved the belt but reduced my momentum too much for any longer or steeper dunes.
- 1jeepExplorer IIdidn't realize you were in the dunes....

Don't take this the wrong way but it sounds like someone needs to use low range more. I have a canam 1000 and in 3 years never even smoked the belt, I have however just recently snapped a rear axle shaft.
Low range in the dunes? THat sounds like fun... Important thing to remember is not everyone uses SxS in the same manner and on the same types of terrain. Some are more forgiving while others are not. WE don't live in a one size fits all world...
Belt issues are real especially in the dunes from my experience regardless of brand. - Y-GuyModeratorI always figure competition in the market is a good thing. Maybe they will give Polaris a run for for their money with this.
As for belts, and being a former Polaris owner - after my 1st experience with one breaking out on the trail I never rode again without a spare and tools to replace it. Polaris Lifetime Belt Warranty? Bahahahahahahah - 1jeepExplorer IIDon't take this the wrong way but it sounds like someone needs to use low range more. You have just been lucky then. We just had a Pismo beach trip cut short by tossing a belt. Not the first time either!
Help at least one person a weekend trip fix or replace their belt. - RedRocket204Explorer

Supposedly not a rush to market at all. Rumor has it Yamaha has been designing and testing this YXZ for ~5 years before releasing it. With the "manual" shift, Yamaha is addressing a part of the market that didn't previously exist and believe it will be a huge success. Even the Polaris and Can Am forums are all over this YXZ with high response of many who are ready to jump ship. Of course those are the vocal ones and expectations are that many Rzr owners are very happy with current Polaris offerings.
That doesn't even address the more efficient power to the ground without a CVT, ~20% more power to the ground with the manual shift. Puts it close up there with the turbo SxS offerings when comparing wheel HP. Now, throw a turbo on the YXZ...
Whatever your views are... it's good to see different offerings from different manufacturers as the consumer ends up with a lot better options. - N-TroubleExplorerManual trans is to differentiate from the rest of the market. Yamaha already knows how to build a CVT. Been doing it for years...
