Swivel Wheel Motorcylce Trailer

I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has used one of these to trailer their motorcycle behind their fiver. Seen here: http://www.cruiserlift.com/swivelwheel78.html it looks like a great idea but I'd like to learn more before purchasing. Thanks

  • The SmartTrailer has 2 ball couplers, so by your definition it's a trailer. :) And so are the rest of them IMO. They aren't permanently attached to the trailer so they are trailers.
  • Quit calling them trailers! They are extensions of the 5th wheel if bolts are used at the attachment points vs ball and couplers! Chris
  • Yes, Virginia doesn't allow double tow, but we were never stopped while we were there with out Smart Trailer in tow. We covered a fair amount of the state and were never given a second look.

That doesn't mean you won't get stopped, but it does reinforce my opinion, yes, just my opinion, that the swivelwheel type trailers are given more latitude than a conventional one. We've been to, and through, North Carolina several times with our Smart Trailer with no issues.

    As always, YMMV.

It's my understanding that the same applies for VA.

  • I pulled 2 bikes on SmartTrailer behind our Big Sky for three years and, all in all, it did an admirable job:

We traveled through several states that don't allow double towing and had no issues whatsoever. In fact no one gave us a second look. I think the swivel wheel type trailers are scrutinized less than a conventional trailer when they are behind a 5th wheel.

You do have to be aware of "tail swing" since you're adding at least 6 feet to the end of your 5er. OTOH it is wonderful to be able to back up with the trailer attached.
  • Never used one but seriously considered. For me, living in the heart of "no doubles" land, it too easily invited extra, unwanted attention from law enforcement, so I ruled it, and others like it, out. Right now, I'm torn between going conventional 5er with motorcycle loader on flatbed TV, or a toy hauler with conventional pickup.
