OK, I am new to the fifth wheel world and honestly a bit nervous being that I have never towed one, but have made the purchase and will be picking it up soon. What do you guys do with your tailgate...

I had this situation with one 5th wheel with a vertical pin box many years ago. The simple solution is:
1. Open tailgate.
2. Back under kingpin sufficiently to attach umbilical in the bed and close tailgate.
3. Close tailgate.
4. Back into 5th wheel hitch and complete the hitching process.
I've been towing 5th wheels with the factory tailgates since 1996 without any problems to this point.
