It is my understanding that leaving the tailgate off for any length of time will eventually cause the bed sides to spread apart due to vibration and bumps.
I've always used my tailgate and lower it to hitch and unhitch. I did have a notched gate for awhile but would even lower it. Once it began showing it's age, I went back to using the original tailgate.
