I'm trying to wrap my head around how you could possibly forget to lower your tailgate when dropping the 5'er. I can't get to the electrical plug or the emergency break away cable with the tailgate up. When lowering the landing gear I also watch the plate to see when I have raised the trailer high enough to pull out from underneath. Can't see that with the gate up either. It has nothing to do with remembering to lower it. Someone please explain how you could possibly do that???
I am well over 6' tall and can reach all my connections in my F350 no matter what position my tailgate is in. I am not exactly sure how other folks leave their stock tailgate up and damage it but I can tell you that they do from reading about it on other forums and seeing evidence of it in our travels around the country. I kept our stock tailgate on at first, then ran without it for several months. We now have the vented V tailgate and I like it really well. I never forgot to raise or lower my stock tailgate but with a V tailgate it takes one of the steps out of hooking up and unhitching. Since we are full time and travel a lot it was worth the expense.
